MNCG Ran Female Engagement Team Course

From 17 June to 21 June 2019 took place, at the “Mario Fiore” barracks in Motta di Livenza, base of  Multinational CIMIC Group – a joint and multinational Army Unit specialized in Civil-Military Cooperation (CIMIC), the Female Engagement Team (FET) Course in favor of the Italian Army, Navy, Romanian Ministry of Defence and civil environment personnel.

The course, carried out entirely in English and structured according to the lessons identified and learned in the Middle Eastern Operating Theatres, in which the Italian Armed Forces have operated over the last twenty years, was organized and conducted by the Multinational CIMIC Group, with the aim of providing the fundamental knowledge and skills to work in a team, in order to be able to interact with women in a given crisis area.

Through communication and negotiation lessons, as well as on gender perspective, students have developed the necessary skills to gain the trust of the local population, interacting mainly with female civilians, in order to create the conditions to achieve a cooperative and collaborative environment, necessary to achieve the mission's objectives.

The teaching staff were made up of specialized and qualified staff of the Unit and external collaborators, such as Lebanese Professor Ranà Khawand - Gender Policy Developer for the Women Training Centre of the United Nations - who gave some lectures on "Gender Mainstreaming", "Gender in Conflict Resolution" and the role of women in the Middle East. Other two guest speakers took part to the course: Dr. Benedetta Gualandi, Humanitarian Lead and Regional Technical Adviser of Oxfam for South Africa, and Dr. Francesca Morando, cultural mediator and former cultural advisor of EUNAVFORMED – Op.Sophia.

The course, in addition to the lessons, gave to 30 participants the opportunity to test through different role-playings what they had learned in the classroom, replicating some possible scenarios in which a Female Engagement Team might find itself operating. This has also been possible thanks to the many extensive field experiences of multinational CIMIC Group (MNCG) personnel.

The MNCG conducts training and education activities at international and joint level in cooperation with the Centre of Excellence for Civil-Military Cooperation in The Hague (Netherlands), through a wider range of courses designed to train and qualify different professional profiles (military and civilian) in the environment of Civil-Military Cooperation.

To date, about 1800 students, civilians and military, Italian and foreign, have attended CIMIC courses at "Mario Fiore” barracks, testifying a level of education, responding to the needs of those who face the changing challenges of the today's operational scenarios.
