THE MULTINATIONAL CIMIC GROUP AT THE CIMIC FORESIGHT CONFERENCE 2025

The Hague, 16–18 September 2025
The Multinational CIMIC Group (MNCG) took part in the CIMIC Foresight Conference 2025, held in The Hague from 16 to 18 September.
The annual event gathered top-level military and civilian stakeholders to reflect on the future of the Civil-Military Cooperation function, with a focus on the emerging challenges along the eastern flank of the Alliance. The MNCG delegation was led by the Commander, Colonel Piero FURLAN, accompanied by the Command Senior Enlisted Leader, Chief Warrant Officer Antonio COLIA.
During the three-day conference, a series of panels and working groups offered participants the opportunity to explore strategic and operational developments in the CIMIC domain, with contributions from highly qualified experts across NATO and partner institutions. Colonel Furlan was invited to join the final panel discussion alongside distinguished CIMIC leaders, including the Chief of Staff of the CIMIC Centre of Excellence (CCOE), the J9 Chief of the Joint Force Command Bundeswehr, and the Commander of the Multinational CIMIC Command (a nationally owned German CIMIC asset).
In his remarks, Col. Furlan offered a NATO-level perspective on the current state of CIMIC, highlighting the operational value and unique contribution of the Multinational CIMIC Group, particularly as the only NATO CIMIC unit formally affiliated with SHAPE. He emphasized that MNCG’s commitment goes beyond conceptual and doctrinal development, drawing instead from concrete experience in exercises, training and missions. This hands-on approach was widely appreciated by the audience as a vital complement to theoretical analysis.
The conference also served as a platform for meaningful exchanges between military commands, international organizations and civilian actors. High-level attendees included the Director of DG ECHO (European Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid Operations), UNOCHA Humanitarian Affairs Officers, and CEOs from civilian companies operating in crisis management domains. Discussions focused on how the resilience of states impacts military missions, and how CIMIC must continue to adapt to the complexity of modern crisis environments through inclusive, multi-domain cooperation. The participation of the Multinational CIMIC Group in the CIMIC Foresight Conference 2025 once again confirms its pivotal role within the NATO CIMIC community, bridging the gap between doctrine and field practice, and contributing to a stronger, more integrated approach to civil-military cooperation.
MNCG is leading the way in Civil-Military Cooperation.
